Days of our Lives taping runs roughly 10 months ahead of what streams on Peacock. Episodes you watch in September 2026 were filmed in late 2025. That gap is far longer than on any other daytime soap, and it explains a lot of Salem's strange timing.
It is why actors who were let go in January 2026 are still on screen now. It is why a new actress can be announced one week and appear the next. It is also why the writers cannot quickly fix a couple that is not working. Here is how the gap works.
How Far Ahead Days of our Lives Taping Runs
The 10-month figure comes from the show's own writers. In a January 2026 interview with TV Insider, head writers Paula Cwikly and Jeanne Marie Ford talked about working on a 10-month tape-to-air delay. Michael Fairman TV summarized that interview and noted that most of 2026 had already been filmed by the time the year began.
A fan-maintained production tracker supports that figure. It estimates that the episodes streaming in September 2026 were taped in the week of November 10, 2025. The same tracker suggests that the gap in 2014 was closer to four or five months. Treat those tracker dates as estimates, since the show does not publish its taping calendar.
New episodes stream weekdays at 6 a.m. Eastern on the official Days of our Lives page on Peacock. Days moved from NBC to Peacock in September 2022, according to Wikipedia's history of the show.
How Days Compares With the Other Soaps
No soap publishes an official lead time, so exact figures are hard to confirm. Still, reporting and fan tracking point to a clear pattern. Days is by far the furthest ahead.
| Show | Platform | Reported tape-to-air gap | How solid is the figure? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Days of our Lives | Peacock | About 10 months | Confirmed by the show's head writers |
| Beyond the Gates | CBS | Around 3 months | Fan reports only, unconfirmed |
| General Hospital | ABC | A matter of weeks | Commonly reported, not officially stated |
| The Young and the Restless | CBS | A matter of weeks | Older reports conflict, not officially stated |
| The Bold and the Beautiful | CBS | A matter of weeks | Commonly reported, not officially stated |
Some older articles claim Y&R tapes eight months ahead. Others describe a few weeks. We have not found an official figure that settles it, so we list it as weeks with that caveat.
Why Days Films So Far in Advance
The main reason is cost. Fairman's report ties the long gap to the cost-cutting that has kept Days on the air past its 60th season. Our read is that shooting in concentrated blocks lets the show use its studio, crew and cast more efficiently, then close down for long breaks.
The fan tracker shows how that works in practice. For years, Days has alternated taping weeks with dark weeks, when nothing is filmed. Squeezing a year of episodes into fewer working weeks lowers overhead. The downside is a stockpile of finished episodes that grows further from real time.
Renewal uncertainty adds another layer. Cwikly and Ford told TV Insider that when a season wraps without a renewal, contingency plans kick in and change the storytelling. The show's latest pickup runs for two years, through at least its 63rd season, which they said gives them room to plan.
What the Gap Means for Exits and Recasts
The clearest example is January 2026. Soap Opera Network, citing the Daily Mail, reported that Carson Boatman, Raven Bowens, Leo Howard and Ashley Puzemis were let go right after the holiday hiatus. A show spokesperson told Soap Opera Digest that because of the long tape-to-air gap, the changes would not be seen for some time.
That is exactly what fans are seeing in September 2026. Johnny, Chanel, Tate and Holly are all still in Salem, even though the actors learned of their exits months ago. Soap Opera Network estimated their final episodes would air around late 2026 or early 2027. The exact last air dates have not been announced.
The gap also means actors can appear somewhere else while still on Days. Michael Fairman TV reported in September 2026 that Leo Howard has joined the final season of Yellowjackets. He is still turning up as Tate on Peacock at the same time.
Recasts work the same way in reverse. The head writers said a new Rachel would begin airing in March 2026 and Conner Floyd would start as Chad in April. Sydney Malakeh's casting as Sydney DiMera was announced on September 2, 2026, and she debuted on September 10. Our read is that the show often holds casting news until shortly before the episodes air, even though the scenes were filmed months earlier.
Why the Gap Changes the Storytelling
Here is our analysis of the biggest creative cost. Most soaps can watch how viewers react and adjust within a few weeks. If a couple falls flat, the other shows can cut its airtime or rewrite the ending before it airs. Days cannot. Cwikly and Ford told TV Insider they cannot change course mid-story based on fan reaction. They said romantic chemistry is the hardest thing to judge because they do not see the couples on screen for many months.
That has a knock-on effect on how the show plans. Our read is that Days tends to lean on big, pre-planned twists, such as the current Dominic Marino mystery, rather than romances that depend on day-to-day audience response. A mystery built from clues can be mapped out months ahead with less risk. A pairing that depends on chemistry cannot.
The gap also shapes how fans experience news. When an exit is reported, the story has usually already been filmed and the actor has often moved on. Fans are left watching a character they already know is leaving. Our read is that this makes Days casting news feel more final and more frustrating than it does on the other soaps.
What It Means for Spoilers and Fans
A long gap creates a big spoiler risk. Actors post behind-the-scenes photos, finish contracts and take new jobs long before their scenes air. Each of those can give away a storyline. Fans expect exits to be revealed through outside news before the show addresses them, and the January 2026 firings are a good example.
It also affects seasonal episodes. Holiday and anniversary episodes have to be written and taped far ahead of when they stream. The head writers' comments suggest the team plans these arcs around the delay, rather than responding to current events.
For viewers, there is one practical tip. If you read that an actor has quit, been fired or joined another show, do not expect to see the change on Peacock soon. With Days, the on-screen payoff is usually months away.
