That gap matters. Salem has spent decades learning that anything Stefano leaves behind may be a trap. Here is what has aired, what is still speculation and why the clues do not all line up.
Who Is Dominic Marino?
Dominic first came up as a name the Kiriakis family kept mentioning. He was described as a wealthy Italian businessman with a hedge fund. He then bought the Kiriakis mansion, which caught EJ DiMera's attention right away.
His links to the DiMeras kept growing from there. When Chad DiMera, Belle Black and EJ searched Dominic's home in Italy, they found cigars, music and habits that closely echoed Stefano. They also found a chess set identical to the one Stefano once sent Marlena and John Black.
A hidden compartment in that chess set held a photo of Stefano holding a young boy, dated 1992 on the back. EJ immediately asked whether the child was Dominic. Belle later brought the photo home to Marlena.

Kate Roberts adds one more thread. When Chad showed her the photo at The Spectator, she said the name rang a bell, though she had never seen the man. Kate's long history with Stefano makes that throwaway line worth watching.

To understand why this story works, you need the backstory. In 1987, Marlena was presumed dead after a plane crash. In reality, Stefano had taken her and later kept her on his island. She did not return to Salem until 1991.

This is where outlets disagree. Soaps.com has framed Dominic's parentage as official. Soap Opera Magazine points out that nobody on screen has said whether the certificate is real, how Marlena's name ended up on it, or who wanted it found. We side with the cautious reading for now, because a document is not the same as a DNA test.
The strongest reason for doubt is the timeline. Marlena came home in 1991. The photo is dated 1992 and shows a young boy, not a newborn. A child conceived during her captivity would have been at most a toddler in 1992. Our read is that the dates only work if the boy was born early in her time away, or if the photo date or the certificate is part of a setup.

How Could Marlena Not Know?
Fans expect the answer to involve Dr. Rolf, Stefano's longtime mad scientist. This would not be the first time. In 2002, the show used Rolf's experiments to explain Rex and Cassie Brady, who were later revealed to be Kate and Roman's biological children, with Marlena as the surrogate.
That precedent gives the writers an easy explanation for a secret child. Soaps.com has floated a bolder theory: that Stefano used John Black's DNA as well, echoing the chess set's missing pawn. That remains fan speculation, with nothing on screen to support it yet.
Why the Dominic Mystery Works
Here is our analysis of why this storyline has taken over Salem in September 2026. Stefano's actor, Joseph Mascolo, died in 2016, so the character can only return through what he left behind. A secret heir lets the show bring Stefano back as a presence without a recast or a resurrection. Every clue feels like a message from him, and that keeps his menace alive.
It also puts Marlena at the centre of a mystery rather than on the sidelines. Deidre Hall's character has often been the victim of Stefano's schemes. This time the question is about her own body and memory. That is a much more personal stake than another DiMera company fight, and it ties together the Brady, DiMera and Kiriakis families at once.
The story also connects to the new generation. Sydney DiMera, now played by Sydney Malakeh, debuted on September 10, 2026, and has already said she knows Dominic's name. Her mother's fiancé, Dante Vitali, reportedly knew Dominic from boarding school. Our read is that the show is using Sydney and Dante to bring the mystery into Sami's side of the family without needing Alison Sweeney on screen.
What It Could Mean for the DiMera Family Tree
If the certificate is genuine, Dominic becomes a previously unknown DiMera heir. He would be a half-brother to EJ, Chad, Kristen and Stefano's other children. He would also be a half-brother to Marlena's children, including Sami, Belle and Eric. That would make him an uncle to Sydney and Johnny twice over.
