Here is the Spectra family explained in one line: they are the loud, fashion-mad clan that The Bold and the Beautiful created, and two of them are now heading to The Young and the Restless. Patrika Darbo returns as Shirley Spectra, and newcomer Ashley Campbell takes over as Coco Spectra in October 2026, just before Sally Spectra marries Billy Abbott.
If you only know Sally from Genoa City, this is the background the weekly spoilers leave out. Below you will find who each Spectra is, how they are related, and why their visit is doing real structural work for the story.
The Spectra Family Explained: Who Is Who
It all started with one woman. The first Sally Spectra was created by William J. Bell and played by Darlene Conley on B&B from 1989 to 2006. She ran Spectra Fashions, a cheeky knock-off house that existed mainly to copy the Forresters.
The Sally that Y&R viewers know is a different character. Courtney Hope's Sally arrived on B&B in 2017 as a younger relative who deliberately copied the original, right down to the flaming red hair. Wikipedia's entry on the original Sally Spectra describes the newer Sally as the first Sally's grand-niece.
Shirley links the two generations. She was introduced on B&B in 2017 as the new Sally's grandmother, and she is listed as the original Sally's sister. Coco is the youngest branch of the family. She is Sally's little sister, a former Forrester Creations intern who once had a romance with R.J. Forrester.
| Character | Relation to Y&R's Sally | Portrayer | Where you have seen her |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sally Spectra (original) | Great-aunt and namesake | Darlene Conley | B&B, 1989 to 2006 |
| Sally Spectra | The bride herself | Courtney Hope | B&B from 2017, Y&R from 2020 |
| Shirley Spectra | Grandmother | Patrika Darbo | B&B from 2017, Y&R video calls, Y&R in October 2026 |
| Coco Spectra | Younger sister | Ashley Campbell (previously Courtney Grosbeck) | B&B, then Y&R debut in October 2026 |
The Original Sally and the Rivalry That Made Her
Conley's Sally was supposed to be a short-term role. Viewers loved her so much that the show made her a full-time character. She became one of daytime's best-known comic divas and earned two Daytime Emmy nominations for the part.
What drove her story was the feud with Stephanie Forrester, played by Susan Flannery. Their fights often ended with Sally getting dunked in water. Over the years, though, the two women became real friends. That path from rival to respected equal is the template every later Spectra story has borrowed.
Her family life was just as busy. She had a daughter, Macy Alexander, and a son, C.J. Garrison, and she went through a stormy marriage to designer Clarke Garrison. After Conley died in January 2007, the show chose not to kill Sally off. Instead, she was said to be living happily in the South of France.
How the Second Sally Rebuilt the Brand
When Courtney Hope's Sally arrived in 2017, she set out to bring Spectra back as an underdog fashion house. That gave B&B a new David-versus-Goliath story against Forrester Creations. Shirley and Coco were on hand as her loyal and chaotic support team.
Hope left B&B in 2020 and took Sally with her to Y&R. The move was easy because both CBS soaps come from the Bell family and share one fictional world. In Genoa City, Sally reinvented herself as a business and media player. She had high-profile romances with Adam Newman and Nick Newman before getting engaged to Billy Abbott, played by Jason Thompson.
Her latest venture is Spectra-Charles Media, the company she runs with her best friend Audra Charles. Keeping the Spectra name on the door is a small detail that says a lot. It tells you Sally still sees herself as the heir to a legacy, not just someone who moved to town.
Who Is Coming to Genoa City in October 2026
First, what is actually confirmed. Soap Opera Network reported this month that Darbo is returning as Shirley and that Campbell is replacing Courtney Grosbeck as Coco. Both are due in Genoa City next month. No exact air date has been announced, so treat any specific day you see online as unconfirmed.
Soap Opera Digest's weekly casting column calls Campbell's run a short stint. The outlets disagree on one small detail. Digest dates Shirley's earlier Y&R video call to 2020, while Soap Opera Network puts Darbo's last appearance in 2021. Both could be right if there were calls in both years, but we have not been able to confirm that.
Soap fans may also know Darbo from another show. She is well remembered as Nancy Wesley on Days of our Lives. That gives the casting some appeal beyond CBS viewers.
Why the Wedding Needs the Spectras
A daytime wedding needs two full sides of the aisle, and until now Sally's side has been nearly empty. Billy comes with the Abbotts, including Jack and Traci, who, according to Digest's casting notes, visits Billy on September 24. Sally has had almost no blood relatives on screen in Genoa City. Her support system has been the family she chose, led by Audra.
Bringing in Shirley and Coco fixes that imbalance. It also gives Sally people who knew her before she reinvented herself in Wisconsin. Soap Opera Magazine reports that executive producer Sally McDonald has billed the ceremony as the wedding of the year. Flying in the bride's family is how a show backs up that kind of promise.
The bigger reason is tone. Right now the wedding story is heavy. Spoilers from several outlets show Audra calling the marriage a mistake, Chelsea Lawson joining the bridal party, and Billy telling Adam to stay away. Sally is also pregnant, which raises the stakes. The Spectras have always been played for comedy, so our read is that they will act as a release valve for all that tension.
Relatives from out of town also make useful truth-tellers. Shirley knew Sally before Genoa City, which puts her in a rare position to question her. Our speculation is that Shirley will be the family voice asking whether Sally is marrying for love or for security. The show has not confirmed that beat.
What the Coco Recast Signals
The show could have left Coco out entirely. Choosing to recast a small, short-stint role instead tells you something about how the Bell soaps work. They value family continuity over a clean slate, and a relative with history costs far less story setup than a brand-new cousin nobody has heard of.
It is also a quiet piece of cross-promotion. On most CBS stations, Y&R airs at 12:30 p.m. Eastern and B&B follows at 1:30 p.m., although local schedules vary. Coco comes with a B&B romance with R.J. Forrester already attached. That gives B&B viewers a reason to show up an hour early, and it reminds Y&R viewers that Sally's history continues next door.
If you want to know why daytime swaps actors instead of retiring roles, our guide to why soap operas recast characters explains the economics. The short version is that audiences follow names and relationships more than faces.
How a Newcomer Can Follow the Crossover
You do not need thirty years of B&B history to enjoy this. Watch Y&R on CBS's official Young and the Restless page or stream it on Paramount+. Focus on three threads: Sally and Billy, Audra's doubts, and the Adam and Chelsea wild card.
For character background, our Young and the Restless cast and characters guide covers the main Genoa City players. To see how Spectra fits into B&B's fashion wars, read our Forrester family tree explainer. You can also track every arrival and exit this September 2026 on our Y&R comings and goings tracker.
After that, keep checking our Young and the Restless news hub as the wedding gets closer. We will separate confirmed casting from fan speculation as October air dates are announced.
