The area around the monument contain an Alai Gate, the Alai Mina and it is also home to the Kuwait-ul-Islam Mosque

The construction of the tower was begun with Qutbuddin Ibek, who was born in the year 1192 and completed in the reign of the Iltutmish

The tower was referred to as 'Manara' until it was renamed Qutub Minar under British rule.

The Emperor Babur In his autobiography, Baburnama also described it as "Alauddin Khilji's Minar" instead of 'Qutub minar.
